Shoulder Replacement

Anatomic and reverse shoulder replacement for arthritis and rotator-cuff damage.

Shoulder Replacement

When is shoulder replacement needed?

When arthritis or a large rotator cuff tear causes constant pain, night pain and loss of movement that medicines and physiotherapy no longer control.

Types of shoulder replacement

  • Anatomic replacement: replaces the ball and socket where the cuff is healthy
  • Reverse replacement: reverses the joint so the deltoid muscle does the work when the cuff is damaged
  • Hemiarthroplasty: replaces only the ball, mainly after fractures

Recovery

  • Sling for about 4 to 6 weeks
  • Gentle movement from the first days
  • Strengthening from around week 6
  • Most daily activities by 3 months, with gains continuing for a year
