What is revision knee replacement?

Revision surgery removes a worn, loose, infected or unstable knee implant and replaces it with a new one. It is more complex than a first replacement and needs careful planning and experience.

Common reasons for revision

• Loosening of the implant over time
• Infection around the joint
• Instability or stiffness
• Wear of the plastic liner
• Fracture around the implant

How it is done

• Detailed X-rays, CT and blood tests to find the cause
• Removal of the old implant with minimum bone loss
• Bone defects rebuilt with augments or special implants
• Fitting of a revision implant with extra stability

Recovery

Rehabilitation starts the next day. Most patients walk with support within 24 hours and follow a guided physiotherapy plan over the coming weeks.
