Why speed matters

A broken hip is an emergency. Surgery within 24 to 48 hours lowers the risk of pneumonia, clots, pressure sores and long-term disability.

Treatment options

• Hemiarthroplasty: replacing the ball of the hip joint
• Total hip replacement for suitable, active patients
• Fixation with a nail or screws and plate when the bone can be saved

Emergency care

• Call the clinic or go to the nearest hospital straight away
• Do not let the patient walk or bear weight
• Keep them comfortable and avoid food and drink until seen
• Bring previous reports and a list of medicines

Rehabilitation

Patients are mobilised the day after surgery, with a walker and physiotherapy. Early movement is the best protection against complications.
