What is ACL reconstruction?

The anterior cruciate ligament stabilises the knee. After a tear, the knee may give way during twisting and pivoting. Arthroscopic reconstruction rebuilds the ligament using a tendon graft through small keyhole incisions.

Who needs surgery?

• Athletes and active people wanting to return to sport
• A knee that repeatedly gives way
• Combined injuries to the meniscus or other ligaments

The procedure

• Day-care or one-night hospital stay
• Keyhole surgery with a tendon graft
• Meniscus repaired at the same time when needed

Return to sport

• Weeks 0 to 6: swelling control, walking and movement
• Months 2 to 4: strength and balance
• Months 6 to 9: running, agility and sport-specific training
• Clearance is based on strength tests, not just the calendar
