Back Pain & Prolapse Disc

Understanding back pain

Most back pain settles with the right care. A prolapsed (slipped) disc happens when the soft centre of a disc pushes out and presses on a nerve, causing back pain and leg pain, tingling or weakness.

Non-surgical treatment

  • Short rest, then early movement
  • Medication and posture correction
  • Physiotherapy and core strengthening
  • Image-guided injections when needed

When is surgery needed?

  • Severe leg pain not relieved after 6 to 12 weeks of treatment
  • Weakness in the foot or leg
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, which is an emergency

Surgery

Minimally invasive discectomy or decompression removes the pressure on the nerve, and most patients walk the next day.
